GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — A 73-year-old tradition of Knott-Craigs attending Union High School came to an end this year when Mitchell, son of Andrew and Laura Knott-Craig wrote his matric at the Union High School.
The Knott-Craigs arrived in Graaff-Reinet late in 1942 when Ronald Knott-Craig took over as managing director of the Graaff-Reinet Advertiser.
The five children of Ronald and Rae Knott-Craig were enrolled at the UHS and matriculation dates are shown in brackets:
First generation: Alan (1944), Arthur (1948), Angus (1950) and Derek (1955). Elizabethrae was born in Graaff-Reinet and also matriculated at UHS (1960).
The second generation followed: Ronald Charles Jr (1974), Ian (1975), Gwenda (1976), Kevin (1977), Janice (1978), Jennifer (1979), Beverley (1979), Michael (1982), Steve Stroessner (American Field Services student for a year with the Knott-Craigs), Angus Jr (1982), David (1985), Anthea (1987), Rae (1988) Andrew (1989) and Jacques du Preez who studied at UHS until 1996 and then went on to finish his matric at Cradock Boys High School).
The third generations were Claire (2009) and Mitchell (2016).
The record is held by Mr and Mrs Vicky Brummer whose grandfather attended UHS when it was formed in 1920. The family still have scholars at UHS.
