GRAAFF-REINET BUSINESS NEWS - The Dr Beyers Naude Local Municipality vehicle testing station was officially opened by Mayor Deon de Vos and Cllr Angeline Booysen on Thursday 21 January after its doors were closed for nearly half a decade, robbing locals of this essential service.
The centre has been closed since April 2017 after damage caused to equipment and a brake roller machine during a storm rendered the center inoperable. The centre briefly reopened in 2019, but had to close again due to a lack of qualified A-grade examiners.
The testing station is situated in Somerset Street next to the driver's license testing facility. Director of Community Services, Gewnynne
Hermanus said, besides roadworthy tests, the center also offers brake testing, quality inspections and suspension checks.
Newly appointed testing examiner Darryl Clingen said the new facility boasts state of the art technology that discourages examiners to bypass the system keeping unroadworthy vehicles off public roads.
Hermanus said, with road safety in mind, his department has assessed the state of road markings and road signs in the municipal area and is busy with upgrades.
The municipality encourages vehicle owners to have their vehicles tested regularly and not just when vehicles change ownership, but as a general safety precaution - especially if you transport people or drive long distances.
