BUSINESS NEWS - Our country's power grid is in a mess due to a lack of maintenance, service delivery and corruption. Water is going the same way. Improper maintenance, drought, and a lack of knowledge is the cause that so many municipalities have never reached Blue Drop status.
Graaff-Reinet has long been in the devastating grip of drought.
The Beyers Naudé Municipality was forced to turn to boreholes. On 30 September 2019 Sowetan Live reported: "A water crisis in the town of Graaff-Reinet has seen the Nqweba Dam run dry, leaving behind an overpowering stench of dead fish while residents 'fight' for water."
The Nqweba Dam level reached 8,4% in April 2021 and since then the supply from the dam was discontinued due to poor quality. Since then Graaff-Reinet has been solely reliant on borehole water, reports Graaff-Reinet Advertiser on 17 November.
Unfortunately, borehole water comes with its own problems. The dissolved salts in some boreholes in the Beyers Naudé Municipality are extremely high, which not only adversely affects the taste of the water but may also contain potentially harmful substances.
Limescale can restrict water flow and cause blockages. It increases maintenance costs and reduces the heat transfer efficiency of geysers and cooling water systems significantly.
Pipes, taps, and appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines, and coffee makers are damaged. Lime reacts negatively to soaps and detergents and causes colours to fade.
The best solution is to treat the available water for homes and businesses and make it safe to drink. Perfect Water has been around for 23 years and is represented throughout South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Swaziland.
