GRAAFF-REINET BUSINESS NEWS - Hanna Makoba, founder of the sewing co-operative New Horizons, will showcase a fashion show with a difference in Graaff-Reinet next month.
The show, hosted by The Village, promises to be a real treat. The theme is 'shweshwe chic', and there will be a predominance of traditional wear in this vibrant fabric. Casual wear, formal outfits, and dresses for special occasions will also be showcased by 15 models, all from Graaff-Reinet.
Carol-ann van Jaarsveld, who initiated the event, explained that she had three main goals: to show what can be achieved by a dedicated entrepreneur; to give local people a chance to perform as models; and to offer the opportunity for Graaff-Reinet residents to enjoy a morning's entertainment with a difference.
"The 'difference' is still a secret at this stage," she quipped.
Makoba founded New Horizons in 1999 with one sewing machine, one overlocker and one table. Her vision to assist single women to make a living has seen many learn skills to be able to support themselves. Currently, there are six women in the co-operative, who work from the business premises in Asherville.
The show will take place on Saturday 9 November from 10am, in the car shed at The Village. For R120, guests will enjoy pre-show refreshments, the show itself, and tea, coffee and snacks afterwards.
Due to the interest that has already been expressed, bookings have now opened, and tickets can be purchased at Our Yard and The Village.
