GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Union Preparatory school is once again excited to present The Wild Karoo Art Exhibition on June 3 at 6pm in the UHS Hall.
The art exhibition is one facet of the Wild Karoo initiative which also includes a gala event and recreational auction in order to raise funds for our unique school.
The exhibition will showcase work by a formidable selection of artists and will offer a variety in medium and style. Confirmed exhibitors who will be sharing their talent include Brenda Pudifin, Bronwen Langmead, Cheryl Smit, Daryl Legg, David Langmead, Hazel van Niekerk, Heidi Slaughter, Hugh Frost, Jac Grobblaar, Jackie Davenport, Janet Kingwill, Joan Schrauwen, Marge Arnott, Marilee Houseman, Mind Shana, Nicky Rosselli, Rob Southey and Shirley Grindley.
Artists have been invited to submit works fitting the theme “Our piece of Africa” which can be interpreted quite broadly and offers scope in creative freedom. The Karoo is our piece of Africa, and although it belongs to nobody it belongs to us all in the sense that we are responsible for celebrating and preserving it. Africa has captured the imagination and attention of artists throughout the ages. The vast spaces, the rich cultural heritage, the spirit of adventure, the existence of life and simply Africa’s ability to arouse all the senses.
This collection of artists, which includes professional and part time, doesn’t only present exceptional talent but people who have interesting stories to tell. David Langmead began his professional painting career in the mid-1990’s and exhibited in various group and solo exhibitions all around South Africa. By 2003, his work was discovered by the international market and he now paints exclusively for Call Of Africa’s Native Visions Galleries. David’s acclaimed work is now held in numerous private collections worldwide. Joan Schrauwen-Artist, author and illustrator lives on the banks of the Berg River Estuary on the West Coast of Southern Africa. Her parents were born in Holland and came to South Africa in the 1920’s. Her grandfather was Tinus de Jongh, the South African landscape master.
Full time artist Darryl Legg is a recognised aviation artist and although the majority of his time is spent on aviation commission work his subject matter also includes portraits, wildlife, marine, locomotive and automotive art. Keep an eye on the Union Prep School Facebook page for more about each of the exhibitors.
The Wild Karoo is a fundraising event for Union Preparatory School and the school would like to extend special thanks to all the artists, contributors and sponsors for their enthusiasm, support and generosity. Tickets can be purchased from Union Preparatory School. No persons under the age of 18.
