GRAAFF-REINET — Some months ago the Karoo Wine Club managed to pin Francois Haasbroek to a date in the Karoo.
Members of the Karoo Wine Club are certainly looking forward to meeting and of course tasting the wines of Blackwater. Francois Haasbroek will be in Graaff-Reinet on October 21 to present a wine tasting of his amazing wines.
Blackwater wines are focused on sourcing fruit from the best possible vineyards across the Western Cape, building long lasting relationships with the growers and do my utmost to make wines true to their origin.
“With the minimal intervention ethos in the cellar, it all comes down to the grapes, no wine making tricks – just sticking to the basics and attention to details. I personally enjoy wines built on natural acidity & grape tannin, not plastered under layers of oak with countless additions and manipulations forced upon it. I trust you will enjoy the wines as much as I enjoy the journey of making them.” Francois C Haasbroek says on his web page.
Chef Gordon from the Veld to Fork Cooking School has just returned from another stint in Italy first at the Terra Madre Salone del Gusto slow food festival in Turin. Then a 4-day working visit to Federico Fiamozzi, the young Italian who spent some time in the Karoo last year training and learning from Gordon, now it was time to return the favour. Federico is based in the Trentino area and works with his family, Gordon was there to learn a few more charcuterie skills.
It feels only apt to have an Italian style menu for this tasting with all the new Italian ideas still fresh in his mind. Federico’s mom, Nadia, made sure to feed him non-stop during his time there, each meal was another “typical Italian dish” from the area they live in (of course!).
The Karoo Wine Club has come a long way and now has a fantastic new venue and this tasting will be the first one at 51 Cradock Street. The venue offers both in and outdoor options which are ideal for the odd evening that the weather in the Karoo is not as perfect as it usually is.
Remember to diarise October 21 at 7pm for 7.30pm. E-mail karoowineclub@gmail.com to book your place for the event or to join the Wine Club.
