NIEU-BETHESDA NEWS — Beautiful décor, fantastic food and festive guests were the order of the day at Die Waenhuis’ third annual Christmas in July function.
Setting the scene for a medieval castle experience, guests entered through a passage of bon fires and was welcomed by the Queen of Bethesda (Victoria Nance) and a very witty Queen Mother (Gill Nel) who became famous for her “off with his head!” commands.
The interior of Die Waenhuis was transformed into a dining room resembling the Middle Ages with flags, fabric, candle chandeliers hanging from the roof with chains, medieval Christmas folk music, a fortune teller and festive guests in costume to complete the picture. The food was delicious and their famous gluhwein warmed guests on a very chilly evening. Chef Jenny Nel’s preparation and presentation of the lamb shanks made for a memorable meal as you just wanted to pick it up and eat it from the bone ala the era at hand.
“We were extremely happy to host another successful Christmas in July and ecstatic that our guests went to so much effort to dress the part. The majority of attendees were from out of town and booked their tickets long in advance, even before the event was advertised” said Jacques Muller, co-owner of Die Waenhuis.
For the first time, Die Waenhuis made weekend tickets available. Guests were encouraged to wander the dusty streets in order to claim their ticket vouchers from participating establishments, offering them a unique small Karoo town experience. The weekend ticket included a Pizza at Alfresco Pizzeria on Friday night, a beer at The Brewery and Two Goats Deli, a hot chocolate from Pickle & Pie Street Café, a fossil tour at Ganora Farm, access to Die Waenhuis Christmas in July function on Saturday and a special Christmas gift from Dustcovers Bookshop.
Die Waenhuis wishes to thank everyone who attended and contributed to the success of the Christmas in July Weekend!
