GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Union's chess teams pitted their skill against several other teams this past week.
Last Monday, Union High hosted a friendly chess tournament against Kroonvale Primêr and Graaff-Reinet Primêr.
Both these schools only started playing chess last year and were nervous to play in their first tournament.
Union's junior players fared extremely well and managed to win most of the matches.
After the tournament, they all played friendly matches against the same opponent and shared some strategic moves.
The opponents were very grateful for the Union learners' willingness to part with their chess knowledge.
It was a good afternoon of thinking, sharing and making new friends.
Senior chess vs Middelburg
Eleven of Union's chess players from the Bishops League travelled to Middelburg to play against Hoërskool Middelburg.
They each played 3 matches of 30 minutes per game, rotating players in each round.
Having drawn the first two rounds, Union was determined to make their move against Middelburg in the last round.
The Union chess players stayed focused eventually managed to beat Middelburg with 20 points to 16, regardless of being one player short. This cost Union 3 points.
An outstanding game was played by Liano Naidoo, who finished his match in less than 5 minutes. Well done to Peter Watermeyer and Liano Naidoo who won all their matches.
