GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Beacon Bay 100s Club Tournament is a doubles tournament held annually where the age of the two players must add up to 100 or more.
Players from as far afield as Port Elizabeth, the Natal Midlands and Graaff-Reinet took part this year.
Members of the Graaff-Reinet Squash Club have been attending the tournament for the last six years, and this year, four teams represented the club, the biggest contingent to date.
There were 62 players in total (31 teams), split into 5 sections. All sections had six teams, except the D Section which had seven.
The first round is a seeding round where each team plays one game to 25 against all the teams in their section. Once the scores are calculated at the end of that round, teams are either promoted into a higher section, dropped into a lower section or remain where they started.
The next round sees each team playing against all the teams in their section in a “best out of three” format to 15. The top three teams in each section were then awarded prizes.
This meant that each team played at least ten matches over Saturday and Sunday with those in Section D playing 12 - a feast of squash for the teams and a real test of fitness.
At the end of the tournament, Graaff-Reinet had acquitted themselves extremely well, with all four teams winning prizes.
The results were as follows:
B Section: third place was taken by Danie Jackson and Roelof (Lieb) Liebenberg.
C Section: first place was taken by Tonie Botha and Etienne von Solms.
D Section: first place was taken by Geoff Crewe-Brown and Willie van Zyl and third place was taken by Rodney Mare and Samantha Graham.
It was another excellent result for Graaff-Reinet Squash Club and all the players enjoyed the tournament immensely.
