KAROO CYCLING NEWS - The Annual Freedom Challenge took place between 14 and 15 November — much later this year due to the lockdown, and the subsequent closing of borders between provinces.
This non-stop mountain biking event takes place from Pietermaritzburg to Wellington, using routes less travelled by.
The route consists of a total of 2150 km over off-road terrain, often using animal tracks, dirt roads, farm roads and twin tracks. The predetermined route also follows the same direction as the wagon wheels of yesteryear.
Cyclists often have to traverse whilst pushing or carrying their bikes to the next point on the map.
"The route crosses six terrestrial biomes and the geography ranges from coastal to mountainous to semi-desert," explained Race Director Chris Fisher.
"Since the route is not marked, riders need to navigate using maps, compass and narrative directions – the use of GPS devices during the race is not allowed and will lead to disqualification", Fisher added.
The 2020 cyclists in the Freedom Challenge travelled along the R391, down Doornhoek Pass towards Hofmeyr on the Saturday and Sunday and had lunch at the local Farmhouse.
From Hofmeyr, they travelled towards Elandsberg, where their overnight stop was. Fewer riders were visible this year, most probably due to the change of dates and much warmer temperatures.
