GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Two of Graaff-Reinet’s most promising young squash players took part in the Alan Stapleton squash tournament in Port Elizabeth last weekend.
There were hundreds of entrants in this sanctioned event and competition was fierce. In many age groups, the top three players in South Africa were competing, and the standard of squash was remarkable to watch.
Wilke van Zyl and Marlien Crewe-Brown, both pupils at Volkskool in Graaff-Reinet, competed in the U.19 and U.13 ladies events respectively.
At only 17-years-old, Van Zyl faced tough competition in the U.19 age group but ended a creditable 11th in her group. Thirteen-year-old Crewe-Brown played exceptionally well and came fourth in the U.13 section.
The Graaff-Reinet Squash Club is very proud of these two young competitors and hope to see more youngsters coming to learn about the game. Tuesday evenings from 5pm to 7pm are set aside for beginners and all interested players are invited to attend and take part in social squash.
