GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — The Proudfoot Golf Tournament held this past weekend was once again a resounding success with more than 260 rounds of golf played over the three days by participants from Port Elizabeth, Somerset West, Grahamstown, Victoria West, Hermanus, Johannesburg and the surrounding towns as well as good local support.
The course was in a magnificent condition due to the tremendous effort of Johnny Ludick and his team.
There was a festive vibe as players prepared to tee-off and there was much bantering and teasing at the 19th hole.
Engen Riverside spoilt everyone on Friday by handing out scrumptious mini pies, samosas and other pastries.
The ideal weather conditions encouraged good golf and great fun was had by all.
The winner on Thursday was Bernie Weyer with 40 points, Friday was won by Rowan George with 43 points and Saturday was won by Wally Elliot-Gentry with 41 points.
The overall winners for the three days were Reg Ryan in first place with 111 points, Rowan George in second place with 111 points and Wally Gentry in third place with 111 points.
The Solomon’s Cup for best 4-ball on Thursday was won by Ryno Coetzee, Gerhard Fourie, Tom Hugo and Sarel van Vuuren - they also won the Reg & Steph Holmes Cup for the best overall 4-ball.
Each evening the players and their spouses enjoyed delicious meals and were entertained with music by Niek, Odette and Dirk.
The committee would like to thank the staff who put in long hours as well as the many volunteers whose contribution resulted in a successful tournament.
The winner of the raffle sponsored by the Royal Port Alfred Golf Club was Richard Swart and Andre` Coetzee won the liquor hamper.
The Club extends their grateful thanks to the sponsors without whom the club would not survive, they are Spandau Spar/Tops, N1 Construction, Mica, Tavcor, Van Wyk & Theron, PSG and Engen Riverside.
Spandau Spar/Tops must be specially mentioned as this was their tenth consecutive year of sponsorship.
Most of the sponsors have already pledged their interest in supporting this popular tournament again next year which will be held on 21, 22 and 23 March.
