GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Aberdeen Primary learners and teachers held an awareness walk through the centre of town on Monday morning, walking as far as the Masakhane clinic and back to the school.
Two police vans, driven by Constable Jemile Green and Constable Thembela Nokhangela, escorted the march, and Warrant Officer Colin Grootboom walked with the children. Many of those taking part had heeded the request to wear blue, the colour for autism support.
World Autism Day was actually on 2nd April this year, but due to the school holidays in April, the awareness campaign in Aberdeen was conducted during May and early June. As reported previously, teachers and parents of all the Aberdeen schools attended an information session at Aberdeen Primary last month.
As with many “special needs” conditions, increased awareness and knowledge within the community are vital for those affected by these problems to receive the help and understanding that they need, and the organisers hope that some of those who saw the children on Monday will be inspired to find out more about the condition.
