GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Councillors and officials of the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality came under fire, when the caucus leader of the DA, Danie Bezuidenhout, lashed out against maladministration.
At the very start of the special council meeting on 30 January, Bezuidenhout said the state of affairs is unacceptable. He complained about the late distribution of council agendas and the lack of time to study the contents and points of discussion. He asked Municipal Manager Dr Eddie Rankwana, to intervene.
"The buck stops with you," he told Rankwana.
"The Mayor always talks about his dream [for the municipality] to be the best. I am afraid that when he wakes up it's going to be a nightmare," Bezuidenhout said, telling Speaker Thembisa Nonnies that there is no improvement within the municipality.
Bezuidenhout said the meeting was actually illegal, but that the DA won't stop the meeting, as important issues need to be discussed.
Nonnies countered Bezuidenhout's claim by saying that the notice for the meeting was within the prescribed period, and that only the electronic agendas were distributed late. "We want to save money by using CDs as agendas, but now the CDs are late," Nonnies said.
