NATIONAL NEWS - There are calls for Hawks head Berning Ntlemeza to be suspended following the publication of a heated letter exchange between himself and National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) head Shaun Abrahams over the prosecution of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.
The letters were contained in the NPA's court submissions in response to an application brought by civil society groups to have Abrahams suspended.
Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi says he’s not commenting on the letters sent by Ntlemeza to Abrahams.
Police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) says it’s also not involved in the matter.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has written to the Minister of Police Nathi Nhleko requesting that he provisionally suspends Ntlemeza.
The DA says it’s become clear that both the NPA and the Hawks have been politically compromised.
The SA Communist Party (SACP) has also previously called for a probe into Ntlemeza’s fitness to hold office, because of his pursuit of Gordhan.
