NATIONAL NEWS - Wits University has made it to the top position in Africa in the 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by Shanghai Ranking.
The institution has been ranked at 203 out of 500 universities around the world because of its increasing research output.
Four other institutions including the University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University and the University of KwaZulu-Natal are on the list.
Last month, Wits was ranked the best in the country according to another world ranking.
The university’s Mohammed Moola says, “We are quite happy that we are regarded as the best university in Africa, but we also say that you have got to take this in the context in which it comes because various rankings use different criteria for their ranking purposes.”
