GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Staff of Midland Hospital in Graaff-Reinet did the town proud last week Friday, when they danced up a storm during a Jerusalema dance challenge.
Jerusalema is a song by South African artist Master KG, featuring Nomcebo, and became a hit when released in December last year. The dance craze has since become a social media sensation, even reaching countries such as France and Romania.
Around 40 Midland staff members, including frontline doctors and nurses, participated in the local challenge, which has garnered over 2 000 views on Youtube. Locals took to Facebook to express their gratitude to the staff members, who have been crucial in the fight against Covid-19.
"You make me proud to say I'm from Graaff-Reinet," wrote Ulrika Leonard, while Betsie Nieuwoud thanked them for their hard work. "Thank you to the nurse and staff who looked after me, God bless you," said Elsie Jacobs.
According to Marie de Vos, CEO of the hospital, the challenge has been a wonderful way to uplift spirits among workers.
"It has boosted moral among the staff members," she told the Graaff-Reinet Advertiser, after also participating in the dance. She challenged staff members of hospitals in the Free State to also participate in the challenge.
Stacey Jacobs, an occupational therapist in her community service year, coordinated the dance. Jacobs is originally from Uitenhage.
"We showed everyone the moves by demonstrating it without music, and then added the music later on. It was amazing to see how keen everyone was to participate," she said.
Although some members of staff were off or on leave the Friday of the challenge, many came to the hospital to participate anyway. After seeing the joy on their faces after completing the dance, it's easy to see why.
Midland, we salute you!
