GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - A man from Circle Drive in Santaville, Graaff-Reinet, Morné Williams (34), was handed down two life sentences in the Graaff-Reinet High Court on Wednesday 22 September for the rape and murder of Julia Lucas (63).
He received an additional five years for housebreaking. The sentences will run concurrently.
A case of murder was opened after the body of Lucas was found lying in a yard of a residence in Circle Drive on Sunday 3 November 2019. It appeared as if she had been strangled and her lower body was naked.
The kitchen door of the house had been forced open and the inside was covered in human faeces and blood. It was clear that a struggle had occurred inside the house.
The investigating officer, detective Warrant Officer Leon Weitz, gathered evidence on the murder scene.
After a thorough investigation the suspect was arrested on the same day, 3 November 2019, and made his first court appearance in the local Magistrate's Court the following day.
Williams remained in custody for the duration of the investigation.
