KAROO NEWS - On 24 August at around 09:40 the driver of a Toyota Quantum-taxi lost control of his vehicle on the N9 before it veered off the road and hit a tree on the side of the road.
According to Unathi Binqose, spokesperson for the Departent of Traffic in the Eastern Cape, the taxi was transporting 15 passengers when the incident occurred 40 km outside of Willowmore on the Aberdeen side.
The passengers were on their way to the Golden Games to be held in Willowmore. Six elderly people got hurt and the rest of the travellers were only slightly injured. The injured were taken to the Midland Hospital in Graaff-Reinet for medical examination.
The Advertiser spoke to two passengers of the Quantum and both said that the driver was not speeding or driving recklessly, but that they heard and felt a loud bump right before the driver lost control of the vehicle. According to Binqose, the road is under maintenance and the driver did not notice it.
Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said that a case of reckless and negligent driving was opened.
