GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - There were 25 arrests for serious crime in the last week in Graaff-Reinet.
The most serious is one for murder, with three for assault GBH and two for assault common. Six suspects were arrested for theft, three for housebreaking and theft, and three for theft from a motor vehicle.
One suspect was arrested for each of the following cases: robbery, shoplifting, possession of drugs, and possession of suspected stolen goods.
Three suspects were also arrested on interdicts.
In the so-called minor arrests, there was one each for traffic vilations and drinking in public, as well as 11 for being drunk and disorderly.
Four convictions were secured in the Graaff-Reinet court.
For drunken driving, the sentence was a fine of R4 000 or 12 months’ imprisonment. A sentence of 24 months’ imprisonment for possession of drugs was suspended for five years.
The final two convictions resulted in sentences of imprisonment, with no option of a fine. For housebreaking, the sentence was 18 months’, and on an interdict, four months. In both of these cases, the convictions included being declared unfit to possess a firearm.
This week’s confiscations comprise 15 counterfeit DVDs , one kudu carcass, two Okapi knives, two wheelbarrows, eight tik straws, and 296kg dagga.
