GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — As can be seen, the levels of the Nqweba Dam are very low at the moment, significantly lower than last year.
Staff from the municipality's Water Treatment Works measure the water level at the dam wall once a week, on a Monday, measuring the depth from the top of the water to the mud.
When the dam is 100% full, the depth will be just under 27m. The last time it was over 100% full and overflowed at 122% was in 2008, and it has a long way to go at the moment to reach that level.
Despite the recent good rains, the level of the dam still stands at 11.8% capacity.
Water restrictions are still in place in the entire Dr Beyers Naudé Municipal area.
Unfortunately, even with restrictions in place consumers are still not adhering to them, and consumption is still too high. According to Ivor Berrington, Director Engineering and Planning, should the restrictions not have the desired results the municipality may have to consider rationing of water.
The water supply in all other towns in the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality is stable.
Rainfall figures as measured at the Graaff Reinet Water Works on Magazine Hill are as follows;
• January: 71mm
• February: 38mm
• March: 19mm
• April: 40mm.
