GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - It was another quiet week for Graaff-Reinet SAPS, with only five newsworthy cases opened.
The first case involved property stolen from a church in Botterblom Street. The complainant left the property at 19:00 on Monday 18 March, and when he returned at 07:15 the next morning, he noticed an open window. He discovered that a Dixon sound mixer, worth R4 200, had been stolen.
• There was also a case of stock theft reported from Pinelands Farm. Two Angora goats had been slaughtered, and the carcasses removed from the grazing camp where they were placed for safe keeping on the night of 17 March. The value of the goats is R3 400.
• A quantity of tik, valued at R480, was found on a man in Kroonvale, leading to an arrest for possession of drugs. At 18:10 on 21 March, a member of Graaff-Reinet SAPS was on patrol in the area when he spotted the man acting suspiciously. When he was searched, nine tik straws were found on his body. The suspect admitted that the drugs belonged to him, and was arrested.
• At some time during the night of 23 March, a young man's house in Riemvasmaak was broken into, after a window was forced open. A suitcase containing clothes and sports shoes was taken, worth R5 800. A case of residential burglary has been opened.
• The final case this week is one of common robbery (ie, no weapon was involved). A 62-year-old man reported that at 14:00 on 23 March he was drawing money from an ATM with his card, when an unknown man came from behind him, grabbed the card and ran away.
At a later stage, the complainant found that R3 300 had been withdrawn from his bank account.
