GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Sixty-seven military veterans were treated to food parcels in Graaff-Reinet on 26 May.
The handover was made possible by Gift of the Givers and Afgri, an Agri Services agricultural services company. They adhered to a call for help from councillor Joy Williams.
Williams said sergeant mayor Dirk Tarentaal approached her for help after he observed that many of the military veterans did not have adequate food, or in some cases no food, during lockdown. "Nobody looks after them, so I had to make a plan to help," said Williams.
She contacted Corene Conradie, coordinator of Gift of the Givers for the Camdeboo area. Conradie committed to helping and then Afgri also came on board.
At the handover at the Pentecostal Protestant Church in Santaville, Graaff-Reinet, Tarentaal welcomed everyone and thanked the people who made the donation possible.
Williams told them it may not be what they expected, but she believes it will make a difference towards their families' need for food during this difficult time. The veterans entertained the organisers and sponsors with a military parade, as part of a gesture of thanks.
