GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Celebrations of no pets in the kennels because of festive crackers and fireworks, were of short duration when a dog had to be euthanized yesterday, 2 January.
New Year ’s Eve (2019) was described by Hillary Chaplin, SPCA inspector, as the first in a long time that people were responsible, not shooting of crackers and fireworks in such way that pets were running away from home.
The morning of 1 January the kennels were empty, but not for long. Pets on 1 and 2 January ran away, seeking hiding from fireworks, as the festive celebrations continued.
One dog had to be euthanized because of injuries sustained running away from crackers set on fire in Kroonvale. The dog fell in a ditch.
Chaplin said they as SPCA had to euthanize the dog on 2 January. “The pet’s injuries were just too serious and too much to save its life,” she said.
Two more dogs were taken into the kennels for safekeeping, while the SPCA is trying to reunite them with their owners.
Chaplin again did a call for no cracker shooting. If anybody sees a stray pet, they can phone the SPCA at 083 641 9180.
