NIEU-BETHESDA NEWS — The South African Museums Association is to host a valuable workshop concerning the conservation of textiles for museum practitioners in Grahamstown on August 28 and 29.
The workshop will be led by South Africa’s foremost textile conservator, Annemarie Carelson of the Ditsong Cultural History Museum.
SAMA EC will sponsor the workshop, including all costs of equipment and facilitation, as a part of their responsibility to develop skills in the Eastern Cape’s museum sector. There will be a nominal fee for catering.
The two-day workshop will be useful for curators and conservators working with collections of clothing or fabrics, including beadwork woven into fabric, as well as for those who work with bedding, curtains or any other textiles.
Shawn Graaff, SAMA representative for the Owlhouse in Nieu-Bethesda, will be assisting with the workshop and is happy to reach out to and share information with any other textile collections in the Karoo for conservation purposes.
Attendees must be individual or institutional members of SAMA, membership forms and more information can be obtained from Tom Jeffrey (SAMA EC Chair) at t.jeffery@nelm.org.za.
