GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - In what is likely a first for Graaff-Reinet, a dead jackal found in town was given a dignified burial at the local SPCA.
Jack, as the jackal was later named, was found lying in a ditch on Cradock Street on 15 September, with no visible injuries to his body. "We do not know what business he had in town," said Hillary Chaplin, SPCA Inspector.
When the case was reported to the SPCA, it was initially believed that a dog had died, as his face was not visible due to the position he was lying in. The ‘dog,’ also believed to be female, was named Jane Dog, and money was donated towards a burial at the SPCA.
However, inspection by the SPCA later discovered that Jane Dog was, in fact, not a dog and also not a Jane.
According to Chaplin, Jack was rather large. "Jackals are known to eat small animals, which would probably include pets if he were to encounter one in town areas, so pet owners should be vigilant," she warned.
Chaplin confirmed that a dignified, private burial was given to Jack, thanks to local sponsors. "Rest in peace, Jack," she added.
