GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Karoo Ballooning is up and running - or rather - up and flying!
After many months of spotting our little town’s jewel in the air, the time has arrived for everyone to reach for the skies and hop into Graaff-Reinet’s own hot air balloon.
See the sunrays crawling over Nardouws to greet the little sleepy hollow, as you lift up, up and away.
As the horseshoe takes shape and the soft mist lifts over the streets and unveils the green and red roofs, take a gulp of fresh air and feel the quiet nestling in your soul.
Have the thrill of a hop, skip and a jump right over Spandaukop or break through the neck between Spandauskop and the Valley of Desolation.
Count the kudu’s, zebra, eland and even the shy buffalo from the air as the bat-eared foxes run around chasing hares. Fly right over the Valley of Desolation - higher than the eagle!
Rising over the dam wall - you’ll see the mirror of the dam’s surface mirroring the giant above your head. As the wind softly blows you to almost kiss the cliffs, follow your shadow as it dances from rock formation to rock steeple.
There is nothing more exquisite and exhilarating than rising high up in the air and seeing life as we know it from a totally new and different perspective.
Enjoy the company of your host and captain, Stefan Ittershagen-Strauss, as he steers the big bubble as the wind directs – towards a destination unknown…
Share a glass of bubbly at the landing site whilst reliving the whole flight and sharing and comparing experiences.
After a light breakfast of “kebabs and cake” at the tranquil grounds of the Botanics Sports Club, you leave with a heart full of memories to cherish whenever you want to let your fancy take flight!
The need to start this business was born when Stefan found out that, as with the majority of people, riding in a hot air balloon is on his bucket list as well.
After almost two years of training and obtaining the necessary licenses and adhering to all regulations, he can now captain commercial flights in the smaller (two passengers) and the bigger (up to 8 passengers) balloons.
Ballooning is one of the safest forms of flight and serious incidents are rarely recorded. Landing can sometimes be a bit bumpy in windy conditions but that is all par for the course in ballooning.
A Facebook page is up and running and all frequently asked questions, pricing and “how it works” are covered in detail. Page name: Karoo Ballooning.
Karoo Ballooning operates under the auspices of Hot Air Ballooning SA - HABSA is one of the bigger and more professional balloon companies in South Africa.
