ROBERT SOBUKWE TOWN NEWS - The Lions Club of Graaff-Reinet (Robert Sobukwe Town) made an official return to the town when it was officially chartered on Saturday 13 June.
“This milestone highlights the power of community, leadership and collaboration,” said Aljone Meyer, president of the Graaff-Reinet Lions Club.
The revival was the result of the efforts of a group of committed individuals, who initiated the process in 2025.
The Lions Club of Graaff-Reinet forms part of the global Lions movement, which was founded in 1917 comprises more than 1.4 million members in over 200 countries and geographic areas. Lions are united by a simple but powerful motto: ‘We Serve’.
Meyer said the club intends to make a meaningful difference in Graaff-Reinet and surrounds through service projects, partnerships and community initiatives, which will include supporting vulnerable members of the community, youth development and leadership programmes, environmental projects and conservation initiatives, health and wellness campaigns, community upliftment and disaster relief and collaboration with local organisations, schools and businesses to create lasting positive change.
“As a newly chartered club, we are excited to embark on this journey of service and to build a strong, sustainable organisation that reflects the spirit and values of our town,” said Meyer.
The chartering ceremony was attended by Lions members, dignitaries, community leaders, family and friends.
Among the Lions dignitaries present were District Governor Avril Hobbs, former district governor and Multiple District Global Membership Team co-ordinator Alistair Tuckett, Global Extension Team co-ordinator Heather Hingle, Second Vice District Governor and Global Membership Team co-ordinator Sanet Emmerick, and Sandra Dunstan, the president of the St Croix Lions Club in Gqeberha.
“We believe that when people come together with compassion, dedication and a shared vision, extraordinary things can happen. Our goal is to build a Lions Club that will serve.”
Clothing and household items, non-perishable food, or other contributions can be dropped off at the Graaff-Reinet Tourism Office. Every donation will make a meaningful difference.
