GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - It was a quiet week again for the Graaff-Reinet police.
A man was assaulted and a 52-year-old woman raped at Brickfields, Graaff-Reinet on Friday 18 January. Earlier that evening, the woman had been in her home, chatting with a male friend. At about 20:00, her boyfriend then entered the house, and assaulted the other man, before forcibly raping his girlfriend against her wishes.
There was one case opened of culpable homicide after a man died in an accident on the R63, about 20km from Graaff-Reinet.
The accident happened at 13:40 on Monday 28 January, when the driver of a silver Datsun travelling towards Graaff-Reinet from Pearston allegedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed through a farm fence after rolling. One of the passengers, a man, was killed. The other four occupants of the car were transported to the local hospital with injuries.
A man riding a bicycle in Jasmyn Street at 17:00 on 27 January was knocked off his bicycle from behind by a white Mercedes car. He sustained injuries to his head and lower arm and was taken to hospital. A case of reckless and negligent driving was opened. The suspect is known.
On 26 January at 16:15, a resident parked his car in front of his house in Bourke Street. On returning to his vehicle at 06:20 the next morning, he found that the four wheel caps had been removed from the vehicle’s wheels.
There was a burglary at a business premises in Church Street, between 19:00 on 26 January and 00:15 the next morning. According to the complainant, a large amount of alcohol was taken after someone broke a window to get into the building. The value of the stolen goods was given as R2 244.65.
A 28-year-old man was arrested for possession of suspected stolen property. While a SAPS member was patrolling near Goedhals Square, he noticed a man carrying a tyre. When challenged, the suspect could not explain who the tyre belonged too, and he was arrested for being in possession of the tyre, worth R4 000.
The final case is one of housebreaking. The complainant alleges that between 11:00 on 23 January and 09:30 on 28 January, everything was locked and in order at his business in Oval Drive. When he went to the store room on 28 January he found a hole in the roof through which access might have been gained. He could not find anything missing, but the cost of the damage to the roof was about R2 000.
