GRAAFF-REINET NUUS - Pastor Thando Petu-Ngqele is a man with a mission: to convert the Graaff-Reinet Blind Care Society into a place of safety and opportunity for the blind.
But that is a tall order because the society, founded in 2003 and named Thandblicaso by pastor Thando, faces various financial obstacles that are hard to overcome, especially in these tough times.
The Graaff-Reinet Blind Care Society is a non-profit, community-based service organisation that supports 87 blind and visually impaired persons (VIP's).
Pastor Thando says his main aim is to provide the blind and VIP's within the greater Graaff-Reinet area with specialised skills development and employment opportunities that will enhance their lives so that they may become independent, self-sufficient and empowered members of the society.
"I want to promote the skills and abilities of the blind and VIP's, irrespective of race, colour, age or creed so that they can also lead a dignified and productive life.
Pastor Thando says his ultimate goal rests on the three "E" pillars: education, environment and empowerment. "I want to encourage members to further their studies by finishing school and perhaps move on to a training centre or even university. I also want them to get to know their surroundings and improve their mobility. And, lastly, to empower them so that they can create opportunities for personal growth as well as financial sustainability."
He has already sent a group to the Enoch Sonthonga Blind School in King Williams's Town for Braille training.

All 87 members of the Graaff-Reinet Blind Care Society are totally dependent on their families to support them. "Times are tough," says Pastor Thando. My immediate need is to find an old house or any available venue from where we can manage the Society from. "That would be the first step in the long road ahead to establish the Society. We can only improve from thereon.
"If there is anyone in Graaff-Reinet that can assist with accommodation and furniture, we will be forever thankful. "
Anyone that can help is free to phone Pastor Thando on 061 884 2043.
