KAROO NEWS - With more time on our hands during lockdown, now is the perfect chance to spend some time outside in the garden, getting some much-needed fresh air and exercise, whilst creating a pleasing space in which to relax.
The whole family can get involved, whether it is sweeping up autumn leaves, pulling out stubborn weeds or preparing an area for planting.
"This is a great time to start a vegetable garden and plant leeks, beetroot, cabbage, kale, onions, carrots, and peas," enthused keen gardener Ian Reed. He also suggested starting a herb garden near the kitchen, with coriander, rocket, thyme, and fennel.
It's also the right season to plant for a pretty spring garden, and bulbs such as daffodils, hyacinths, tulips and agapanthus can be planted now.
Fortunately, bulbs and seeds are on the list of essential supplies that can be purchased now, and local supermarkets stock packets of seeds.
Estelle van Wyk agrees with preparation and soil enrichment for winter flowering plants. She suggests planting seedlings of poppies, violas, sweet peas, primulas, snapdragons and all varieties of daisies.
Phew! I'll take a rest now.
