GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Agri operations opened with the announcement of level four lockdown, but local farmers were well-protected by Agri SA during level five.
Dave Stern, chairperson of the Graaff-Reinet Agri District Union, said that for them the agriculture business was nearly fully operational, with the help of Agri SA and Agri Eastern Cape.
"If it weren't for [Agri SA and Agri EC] we would've been in dire straits. They know agriculture has to feed a nation," said Stern.
He explained that, whenever there were questions, trouble, help needed or uncertainty, the two main bodies did not hesitate to negotiate on a ministerial level to solve problems. Stern said the only one big problem they had to deal with was when equipment, such as machinery, broke down and had to be fixed.
With level four taking effect, all agricultural products are allowed to be exported. Products produced for export may be exported. Forestry, as well as agricultural research, is allowed. Bee farms may also work full steam ahead. Wine, other alcoholic beverages and wool may be exported.
Manufacturers of tractors, as well as shops that sell agricultural products, may reopen and livestock auctions may take place under strict conditions.
