ABERDEEN NEWS — Four cases were concluded this week in the regional court in Aberdeen.
Joshua Smith (38) was sentenced to eight years imprisonment for culpable homicide, after killing his girlfriend in January 2016. Police were called to the house in Rafferty Street, Lotusville, after the couple were heard fighting.
The badly-beaten body of 27-year-old Amanda de Bruin was found on a mattress on the floor. Smith had hit her repeatedly, all over her body and head, with a wooden pole.
A 49-year-old woman, Sanet Beha from Namibia, was sentenced to five years imprisonment for the theft of a bakkie in March 2016. Beha was employed as a manager on the farm Sandrift by the person who was renting the farm. Last March, she stole a bakkie from the farm, and sold it in George. It was later recovered in Port Elizabeth by the Cradock Vehicle Theft Unit.
In a case of attempted sexual assault, an 18-year-old youth from Thembalesizwe, was found guilty of the attempted assault of a 16-year-
old girl, which happened in Bacon Street in August last year. He was sentenced to three years imprisonment, suspended for five years.
David Booysen (22) was sentenced to six years imprisonment, of which three are suspended for three years, for aggravated robbery. The incident occurred in September 2014, when the victim was stabbed during the robbery in Vink Street, Lotusville.
One robbery occurred last week. On Friday, February 16, a man was walking along Springbok Street in Lotusville when he was approached by another man, asking for money.
When he said that he didn’t have money, the suspect became aggressive and started to search him, and took a R200 note from the victim’s pocket. The man struggled and tried to recover his money, but without success. The case is still under investigation.
Two cases of housebreaking and theft were reported. The first happened on Friday, between 21:00 and 22:00, when the door of a house in Boy Jantjies Street was forced open. Cash, a pack of Russian sausages and a bottle of wine, together valued at R95, were taken.
During the night of February 16, there was a housebreaking at a house in Porter Street. There were no signs of forced entry. A laptop, radio, airgun and ten smoking pipes, all to the value of R6 900, were taken. Both of these cases are still under investigation.
