GRAAFF-REINET NEWS- A business owner lost his entire shop's stock and fridges when a fire destroyed the majority of Ryneveldt Square Supermarket on the corner of Park and Rothman streets at 20:30, Thursday 12 January.
The shop manager told the Advertiser he had left the building yesterday at about 20:00, all locked and in order. He said neighbours alerted him after seeing smoke coming from of the shop.
The emergency services were on the scene within minutes after they were alerted. The owner, Moktar Hossai, thanked all his neighbours for contacting the emergency service.
Fire experts remind us that load shedding poses a significant fire risk and that electrical fire hazards are common after periods of load shedding. Home and business owners are, therefore, encouraged to put basic Fire-risk measures in place.
Consumers of electricity are advised to unplug or switch off all electrical cables, devices and equipment at plugs during a power outage. Bearing in mind that the power supply can return at any time, all electrical connections should be regarded as live.
The origin and cause of the fire is still under investigation.
