ABERDEEN NEWS - For the first time in over seven months, all three boreholes in Aberdeen are pumping strongly after the installation of a new borehole was completed last Friday.
Residents have been complaining about low water pressure since the end of last year, which was largely due to the number two borehole that was out of commission.
The problem started last December, when the pump motors in two of the town's three boreholes burnt out, leaving residents in the highest areas of town and Thembalesizwe without water for long periods. New pumps were installed at the end of December, and water flowed freely again.
However, this relief was short-lived. Early in January, the top areas of town and Thembalesizwe were once again without water. This, after tools were accidentally dropped into the borehole, which made it unusable.
Rabie Gericke and the late Pieter Lategan showed the municipality where a new borehole should be drilled, just six meters from the defunct one.
Lategan's son Pietie, and Gericke, were awarded the contract to install the new borehole in the middle of May. Gericke reported that the new borehole is stronger, and has more water.
The local men were subcontracted by La Rocca Construction, the company employed by the Department of Water Affairs. Payment was received from La Rocca for the drilling last week, and on Friday, Pietie and Gericke were on-site with three of their workers to install the pump and complete the electrical work.
This week, residents have noticed a considerable improvement will all three boreholes pumping for the first time this year.
