ABERDEEN | GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — A 37-year-old man from Port Elizabeth was arrested last Friday in connection with the armed robbery of a Parmalat truck near Aberdeen on Thursday, June 22.
Due to the footage recorded by the many security cameras on the truck, police were able to identify the vehicle used in the robbery by its registration number.
The Nissan Almeira is owned by Thrifty Car Rentals, and police were able to ascertain that it was due to be returned to the depot at Port Elizabeth Airport between 07:30 am and 14:00 on Friday, June 30.
Investigating officer Warrant Officer Welcome Tiya, accompanied by four members of the uniform branch from Aberdeen and Graaff-Reinet, went to Port Elizabeth and waited at the airport on Friday. Just before 2pm, Sivuyile Pityana arrived at the depot to drop off the car.
He was arrested and taken to Aberdeen, where he appeared in the Aberdeen Magistrate’s Court on Monday, July 3. He remains in custody in Graaff-Reinet while the investigation continues to find his accomplices.
