GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Tens of radio control plane hobbyists will be visiting Graaff-Reinet from Wednesday, June 14 to Sunday, June 18 to attend the annual large scale and turbine jet fly-in planned for this weekend.
If you have ever been interested in remote-controlled aircraft, this weekend is your chance to find out just about everything you would ever need to know.
This year's fly-in will be held at the Graaff-Reinet airfield, situated just outside of town on the road to Middelburg and all local RC enthusiasts are welcome to come out, see the planes and talk to some of the pilots.
The fly-in is being held a month later than usual as most of the pilots had attended a national event in Gauteng during the months of April and May. This means that the pilots - who hail from all over South Africa - will be experiencing colder conditions than that of previous years.
The colder weather is, in fact, favoured by the turbine jet pilots as the denser air allows their aircraft’s turbines to perform at their best.
The usual glider towing will also take place favouring midday when the thermal winds are most active.
An electric fun-fly will take place at the Botanics Sports Grounds on Friday evening, June 16, followed by a meal at the restaurant.
