GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — After seeing the challenges that people, particularly in the townships, are going through, a group of Umasizakhe residents have got together to form the Luphawu Foundation, aiming to make a profound difference in their community.
The Foundation, which currently has about twenty members, will be launched at a formal function on 16th June in the Umasizakhe Community Hall, at 10am. Many local performers, as well as school choirs, have been invited to entertain the guests. All stakeholders have been invited, including officials from the municipality and various departments, the mayor, child care centres and churches.
According to the founder, local businesswoman Lindi Fula, the vision of the Foundation is “to help our community tackle difficult health, education, social, economic and welfare issues that would otherwise be left to chance to solve”. Fula is joined on the committee by fellow Umasizakhe residents Monwabisi Morley, Vuyisile Booysen and Mandisa Bastyana, all born and bred in the town, and committed to making a difference.
“This organisation has the exclusive aim of uniting our community in Graaff-Reinet and developing innovative ways of creating a better life and opportunities for them,” said an enthusiastic Fula.
The Luphawu Foundation represents a basket of good causes that the public feels strongly about and want to support. They will be focusing on issues affecting children, including feeding schemes and education, programmes for the youth, illnesses such as HIV/AIDS and cancer, and older people. Skills development training will also be an important aspect of the group.
