GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - "The dire state of the planet is what keeps me motivated."
This according to Graaff-Reinet local Rebecca Light (23), who recently did her town proud when she attained a BA honours degree in Geography and Environmental Studies at Stellenbosch University (SU). She graduated top of her class.
The former head girl of Union High School says her interest in this field of study comes from her dad, local lawyer Derek Light, who worked towards banning fracking in the Karoo.
"He taught me how important it is to look after your home, and that changing the world starts in your back yard." Rebecca's mother, Moira, is also a lawyer.
"I'm very lucky to have parents who are involved and support me. They are the most hard-working and passionate people I know," Rebecca adds.
Her parents are thrilled that her hard work has paid off. " Derek and I are immeasurably proud of her persistence, dedication and hard work over four complex years," says Moira.
Rebecca is currently studying towards a masters degree, and her ultimate goal is to attain her doctorates. She is currently an assistant lecturer at SU and hopes to one day become a researcher and lecturer.
"My advice to young people who wish to study is to work smart. Often people think that hard work is the golden advice, but I believe that you must enjoy what you do and have a balanced life."
