LIFESTYLE NEWS - South African dad, Dean Barber, the father of an adopted child, is distributing an online petition and video, appealing to the public to prevent a new section of the Children’ Act regarding adoption being passed.
The amendment would make any private adoption impossible as all adoptions would have to be free of charge, making it impossible for private social workers or professional agencies to facilitate the adoption process. Adoptions would be left to overworked state social workers, untrained in adoption issues.
Many other people have spoken out against the adoption amendment, including Western Cape Minister of Social Development, Albert Fritz.
In a media release Fritz condemns the steam-rolling of recent amendments to Sections 249 and 259 of the Children’s Act of 2005. He says these amendments will make it illegal for anyone to charge fees for professional adoptive services; putting a halt to adoptions both in South Africa and oversees.
The official petition is at the end of the video and Barber is sending it to President Cyril Ramaphosa. Barber asks that everyone share this video and petition to garner maximum support to stop the new legislation.
