GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Graaff-Reinet Animal Welfare Society (GRAWS) is urging all residents to have their dogs vaccinated against Canine Distemper after cases of this deadly virus have been encountered.
Distemper is a world-wide virus that is highly contagious.
The virus weakens the immune system, and your dog might have some of the following symptoms: mucoid discharge from the eyes and / or nose, diarrhea and nausea.
Younger dogs and unvaccinated dogs are most likely to get infected. Infected dogs can spread the virus through coughs, sneezes, urine, faeces, saliva and contact with surfaces or objects.
There is no specific treatment or medication for Distemper. Annual vaccination is the only effective way of preventing your dog from getting the virus.
