GRAAFF-REINET NEWS – An urgent notice was issued by the Dr Beyers Naude Municipality to the residents of Graaff-Reinet and surrounds this afternoon.
The notice stated that the individuals who loaded some of the contents of a truck that overturned on the N9 on Saturday, July 15, must take note that contents of the truck, although it smelled like diesel, is in actual fact not diesel.
It is a very low flash point flammable liquid in a raw stage which smells and looks like diesel.
It is highly flammable and will ignite if it comes into contact with heat, sparks or flames.
It may cause damage to diesel engines and containers filled with this liquid may explode when heated.
Inhalation or contact with the material may irritate or burn skin or eyes.
Those in the possession of this liquid must immediately remove and isolate contaminated clothing or shoes if it has come into contact with the liquid.
The technician from the hazmat company appointed to rehabilitate the scene, stated this morning that anyone with this liquid in their possession must inform the local Fire Services immediately so that it can be destroyed.
Lastly, the community must also take care not to buy this liquid from other residents as it is still in a raw phase and not good for any usage.
