ABERDEEN NEWS— Learners from Kamdebo Primary School in Aberdeen were invited a few months ago to partake in a provincial competition held last week, organised by the Department of Water and Sanitation.
The Kamdebo youngsters entered in the music category and were placed third out of more than twenty schools. Teacher Esteline de Jager cleverly made up new words, relating to water and sanitation, to well-known songs such as Kumbaya, which were accompanied by percussion instruments and an African drum.
The nine learners from Grades 6 and 7 put in a great deal of effort for their presentation. A group from the school had entered the competition last year but were unplaced - this year, they knew what to expect and were better prepared.
The whole trip was paid for by the Department of Water and Sanitation and was an experience in itself for the children. They were transported to King Williams Town and Bisho by a local taxi service and stayed overnight in a bed-and-breakfast. The children wore striking blue and white uniforms, made by Clarina Finnis - this was the only expense for the parents.
De Jager would like to thank the HODs and principal of the school for their encouragement, and the parents for supporting their children.
