GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Graaff-Reinet SPCA has urged pet owners to sterilize their animals, after the organisation admitted 41 animals within 24-hours last week — the local SPCA's highest number of unwanted animals ever recorded.
"Three of the animals gave birth shortly after admission, which raised the figure to 54," said Graaff-Reinet SPCA Inspector, Hillary Chaplin.
According to her, the SPCA usually admits 60 animals per month.
"We will never judge pet owners who rather surrender their pets to us than leave them to starve," said Chaplin, who added that the main reason people are giving up their pets is due to a reduced income or no income due to Covid-19.
"We understand the financial pressure pet owners are faced with these days, and in this case surrendering animals is the responsible thing to do", Chaplin said.
Chaplin, however, urged pet owners to neuter or spay their animals.
"When you acquire a pet, please factor in their sterilization beforehand," she said. "There is never a good enough reason to breed your pet. We can assure you, there is no shortage!".
