GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Graaff-Reinet SPCA came to the rescue of a mare outside Nieu Bethesda last week Wednesday after she managed to get stuck on top of a barbed wire bordering a steep slope.
According to SPCA Inspector Hillary Chaplin, she and Kennel Worker Basie Marlow arrived at the scene at around 11.30am, to find the mare's worried foal lying next to her.
"It appeared from the large amount of the mare's droppings that she had been stuck for several hours," Chaplin said.
Marlow managed to make a harness for the horse, and safely remove her from the fence. "The moment she was released the foal started drinking from her," Chaplin added. "She was happy to be reunited with her mom." Chaplin said the horses are not wild, but it was unclear who they belonged to. "[After the foal drank], the two horses walked away."
She advised that locals address similar incidents case-to-case. "It's always best to assist the animals as soon as possible, but if they are unable to do so themselves, they must contact the SPCA."
