ABERDEEN NEWS — After a quiet spell with no housebreakings, and only two assault cases and two cases of contravention of protection order, the Aberdeen police have had a busy week this week, with several arrests made and cases finalised in court.
Two suspects, age 23 and 25, were arrested on January 31 for a case of housebreaking and theft that occurred at the Caravan Park in town on January 24 last year. A rake and a spade to the value of R180 were stolen from a storeroom after the security gate was forced open.
Both suspects appeared in court on February 1, and the case was postponed until March 1 for further investigation. Both suspects have previous convictions for housebreaking and theft and theft cases.
A 33-year-old man was arrested on January 31 for housebreaking and theft that occurred at a house in De Voss Street, Lotusville.
The suspect forced open a window to gain entry to the building. A Samsung television to the value of R4 000 was stolen. This suspect also appeared in court on February 1, and his case was also postponed until March 1 for further investigation. The suspect has previous convictions for housebreaking and theft, theft and stock theft.
A 27-year-old man was arrested on February 1 for a theft that occurred at a house in Zuma Avenue, Thembalesizwe. The door of the house was open, and the suspect walked in and took a television set, remote control and power cable to the value of R 2 800. A 32-year-old man was arrested for housebreaking with the intention to commit an offence unknown to the Prosecutor, that happened on February 3 at about 22:40 at De Voss street, Lotusville.
The suspect broke a window to gain access, and the 85-year-old lady who lives in the house alone heard a noise and came across the suspect when she went to see what was happening.
There was a struggle between them, and a neighbour, fortunately, heard the screams of the lady and called the police. After the quick response of SAPS, the suspect was arrested on the scene.
The case has been postponed until February 8 for Legal Aid. The man has previous convictions for housebreaking and theft as well as theft.
Three men were sentenced on February 1 for possession of dagga. Two of the men were arrested in Kudu Street, Lotusville, 26-year-old Heindrich Jaer from Lilie Street, Lotusville had 10 stops of dagga, and Leon Barries (24), of Hoffman Street, had one stop. Elton Smith from Thangana Street, Thembalesizwe, was stopped in Grey Street, Aberdeen, with one stop.
All three men were sentenced on February 1 for possession of dagga, with a fine of R300 or 30 days imprisonment, suspended for one year.
Two male suspects robbed a shop in Mossie Street, Lotusville on February 3 at about 03:30. One suspect threatened the owner with a knife, and the men stole R 1500 in cash. The two men, aged 23 and 26, were arrested on Tuesday, February 6. The case has been postponed until February 8 for a formal bail application on further investigation.
Both men have previous convictions for housebreaking and theft cases.
