GRAAFF-REINET - This past Friday morning, 25 January, a community awareness campaign was held in Graaff-Reinet with the aim of mobilizing residents to register to vote for the upcoming national and provincial elections.

This campaign - held on the dawn of the last weekend afforded to citizens of South Africa register to vote in order to ensure a free and fair 2019 election - was the initiative of the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) office in Graaff-Reinet, who was assisted by the Dr Beyers Naudé Municipality (DBNM), the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
During the course of the morning, approximately 300 people were reached and urged to register to vote.
Many youths who had not yet registered where given the details of their voting districts and voting stations where they could go to register.
"Unfortunately, amidst all the active promotion of citizenry, there were also many community members who said they felt no change would come from voting and therefore they choose not to vote," said Natasha Peterson, a spokesperson for GCIS.
She continued, "The right to vote is afforded to all citizens and is an essential part of our democracy. Promotion of democracy education will continue in the hopes of having all South Africans turn out to cast their vote later this year."
