GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Criminals in Graaff-Reinet are feeling the heat with a new crime fighting duo on the beat.
Constable Lorenchia Jacobs and police dog Yady have hit the beat running and have been tracking hot on the heels of those choosing to flee from the authorities.
The combination, based out of Graaff-Reinet, started last month and in doing so created a piece of police history with Jacobs being the first female dog handler based in the region.
After four months training to prepare themselves for the rigours and challenges as a police canine combination, the team has now been actively serving the public of Graaff-Reinet for a month.
Jacobs, who spent five years as an officer in Somerset East and Graaff-Reinet before chasing her dream of becoming a dog handler, was born and bred in Graaff-Reinet.
Jacobs matriculated at Spandau Senior Secondary School after which she completed her training at the Bisho Police Academy.
She began her career in 2012 as a student constable at the Graaff-Reinet police station after which she completed her basic training at the Somerset East police station. There she worked for a year before returning to Graaff-Reinet where she joined the town's thin blue line in preventing and fighting crime.
A chance to join the local dog unit was hard to resist and the feisty constable grabbed the opportunity when it presented itself last year, starting her K9 training in August 2017 and successfully completing it on December 22.
Jacobs describes Yady as a "vibrant, hyperactive and intelligent partner" and is looking forward to serving Graaff-Reinet as a police canine combination.
