KAROONEWS - Last week, the Advertiser asked readers to share their poems with us, and they did not disappoint.
Read their works below:
die 1 Junie
-Deur Barend Mouton (Graaff-Reinet)
'n wintersdag
snerpend koud
staan einde se kant toe
en voëls flikker momenteel vry oor Graaf-Reinett se klippe
wat teen rante koersloos
...geel
waar eens dor was is
daar nou poele vir bad en
...plas
Inperking se verwarring
-Deur Hermi Baartman (Graaff-Reinet)
deur al die reëls en regulasies
van inperking en presidensiële manifestasies
wanhoop wat mense laat kreun
talle goedgunstiges wat pleit vir steun
sien ek vanmôre hoe ongemerk
totaal en al oningeperk
reageer die natuur op die verwarring
die treuremoerbei langs die huis
het sowaar oornag juis
sy blare op die grond gestrooi
’n blaremat so mooi
rankvygies het skoon handuit geruk
verras merk die die groot geluk
tussen aalwyne en plakkies
het Namakwaland madeliefies
sommer so self hul staangemaak
ten spyte van menslike verwarring
draai die aarde en die maan
op hul opgelegde baan
tydig ontvou die wenteling van seisoene
Silence
-By Petroné Fourie (16), Graaff-Reinet
The world had forgotten to laugh, forgotten to cry
And kept chasing nothing, not seeing time fly by.
And we never realised the most unseen theft
Was the noise at first welcomed, until it never left.
And we heard when people spoke, but never listened to the words
And became robots when we had once been birds.
We got so focused on moving forward that we never looked around
Until it was too late and we lost everything in our quest to be crowned.
And the third war came, different than we ever thought
For it was a pandemic our world had never fought.
And the war was difficult for it was also one of mind
As we had left our old lives behind.
We had to stay home so the condition couldn’t spread
And prevent fear from sleeping in our bed.
And the world shuddered as it took its first breath in years
And for the first time, our cheeks were again stained with tears.
And we realised we had no control over our lives
But still, God gave us a blessing in disguise.
For we were given something more precious than a few pennies or dime
Do you not see that we have been given time?
For we are now closer, when we’ve been so apart
As we begin to heal from the sicknesses in our heart.
We’ve been given time to uncover the passions that we lost
Time to redeem the things we’ve given up at a too high cost.
We’ve been given time to choose faith over fear
Time for our visions to finally clear.
Do you not feel alive as you take your first breath in years?
And feel your cheeks stained, this time with laughter tears.
Listen closely to the peaceful sounds to be heard
Listen, because for the first time the sound of silence has spoken a word.
