SOMERSET-EAST NEWS - 34-year-old Simphiwe Grootboom was found guilty and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for the rape of a female in the Somerset-East Regional Court.
It was alleged that the 26-year-old victim was consuming alcohol with the boyfriend and suspect. They later went to sleep but only to be woken up with the suspect on top of her.
She found that her trousers had been pulled off and that she had been raped. She identified the suspect as he ran away from her.
A case of rape was registered at Somerset-East Police Station on Saturday 2 March 2019 and it was handed over to Graaff-Reinet Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).
The suspected person was traced and arrested on Monday 4 March 2019.
The suspect case was transferred to Somersert-East Regional Court where he was found guilty and convicted on Thursday 26 August 2021.
Captain Theo Van Zyl, Commander of Graaff-Reinet Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit, said the hard work and dedication of W/O A.G.E Hufkie did not go unnoticed.
He gave a good account of himself throughout the investigation and that the sentence handed to the accused should be a deterrent to potential perpetrators of gender based violence against women and children.
